October is Buy Nothing New Month (BNNM). Who knew? It was started three years ago inMelbourne,Australia. The organizers of BNNM ask consumers to think about the origin of the things we buy. When you see an incredibly cheap tee-shirt, ask yourself what the real cost might be in terms of human suffering or environmental destruction. Think, also, about the 60 pounds of non-biodegradable clothing that is trashed by each of us every year. BNNM then asks us to come up with creative alternatives to buying new clothes. Some suggestions include: swapping, borrowing, sharing, revamping or looking for second hand bargains. October is winding down. Time to get with the program!
